Why Not to Use Twitter for Your Business
Among all the users recommending Twitter for business social networking, there are a few voices calling for business users not to utilize this site. Here are three of the top reasons Twitter might be a bad idea for your business.
1. Information Overload
With so much on the web already, it’s easy to drown in a sea of information. As soon as you build up followers, you start getting tweets sent to your main page about everything from the contents of their stomachs to their favorite sports teams. Not only that, but using Twitter to communicate means maintaining a delicate balance of personal and business-related tweets without committing information overload on those same followers, or seeming too self-promotional.
2. Message Limitations
Is there really that much important information that can be conveyed or understood in 140 characters? The limitations can make it difficult to say anything of value, and a blog has much of the same potential for readership without the constraint of “140 characters or less”. Besides, the same principle applies to the tweets you’re reading!
3. Workflow and Productivity Interruptions
The constant flow of information is central to Twitter. In order to keep up, you have to spend a lot of time on Twitter, reading and responding to tweets. You have to make sure what you are tweeting is valuable and honest, and also make sure to follow back anyone who has followed you. Twitter can be looked at as another diversion for a busy businessperson, somewhere you can easily end up wasting a day while never gaining anything worthwhile out of it.
Now that you have some information about the negatives of Twitter to balance against all the hype, keep these reasons in mind while deciding whether or not using Twitter will contribute to your business’ success.
